A Note on Eco Textiles
|
Studio Naenna uses only natural fibres because these fibres are the most comfortable to wear
and use in the home, and they are energy efficient to produce, whereas synthetics are not. In the case of some chemical usage, a waste
water treatment system has been installed at the Studio Naenna main gallery dye shop. Studio Naenna is a pilot project for training other small weaving groups in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia
in environmentally friendly dyeing methods, waste water systems and natural dyes.
Studio Naenna supports the Weavers For the Environment women's group, whose main aims are to:
- Train and offer satisfying work to young women in their own villages to
bring self esteem and an alternative to migrating to the cities to find work.
- Research and document women's indigenous knowledge of natural dye plants, weaving methods and cultural aspects of costume and textiles.
- Benefit the weavers and their families.
- Develop designs that are suitable for export while maintaining the original knowledge of
traditional designs.
- Plant natural dye plants to create a resource for future generations.
